In 2024, two broods of periodical cicadas are set to emerge simultaneously, marking a rare occurrence that happens only once every 221 years! These broods have been patiently waiting underground—one for 13 years and the other for 17 years. The emergence will be visible and audible in cities and natural areas spanning a stretch of the U.S., including parts of southern Wisconsin and most of Illinois.
During the emergence, you can expect to witness a remarkable phenomenon as billions of cicadas emerge from the ground, covering trees, sidewalks, and virtually every available surface. Additionally, consider utilizing screens on windows, if you have them, or patio doors to prevent cicadas from entering your living space. While cicadas are not known to seek shelter indoors, these precautions can help maintain a comfortable environment for you and your pets.
